Language Literacy

The idea of babies and toddlers talking, and reading can seem incredible. At Lake Dow Learning Academy, we have found that students communicate at different levels. However, we have learned that it isn’t necessary to “teach” very young children how to speak. Lake Dow Learning Academy is here to help your child begin to develop their language and literacy skills.

It is hard to imagine them debating with you about curfews or curling up with the newest Harry Potter book. But language and literacy skills start early—from birth. Watching your baby and learning how she communicates through sounds, facial expressions, and gestures are all important ways to help her learn about language and the written word.

At Lake Dow Learning Academy, our formal classes and other activities push babies and toddlers to read and write words helps development and makes them do better in school when accompanied by play. We don’t believe in pushing our students to do activities that they don’t enjoy or that is beyond their skills. We take language and literacy seriously and we go the extra mile to make sure your child strives.

Supporting and encouraging young children’s emerging literacy does not have to be difficult. Our goal at Lake Dow Learning Academy is to be great role models to help young children learn reading skills. If adults read and write with children, the children are more likely to enjoy reading and writing and to learn that literacy is important. Many childcare providers read books aloud but forget that there are other ways to encourage children’s emerging literacy skills.

Learning how to communicate effectively is not just a skill that begins in pre-k. The basics of literacy begin as early as infancy. As a childcare provider, we play an important role in supporting young children’s developing speaking, reading and writing skills. Children will begin learning the basics of reading and writing when they repeatedly encounter reading and writing in and out of the classroom environment. By watching adults around them who read and write, children will become interested in reading and writing, too.
